Sustead Church Building

This church dates in part from the

  • Saxon times          the lower part of the round tower
  • the 13th Century   the four belfry windows in the tower
  • the 14th Century   the West Porch, the archway behind the pulpit and the south wall
  • the 15th Century  the square headed windows in the nave, the single bell in the tower
  • the 19th Century   additions to the Chancel and various repairs and refurbishments.

Points of Interest

Worthy of note during your visit are:

  • the lack of entrance to the tower from the church
  • the round tower, some 48 ft (15m) high and internal diameter of 7 ft (2.1m)
  • the simple screen with narrow one light windows
  • the 15th Century octagonal font with the armorial shields of local families
  • the 17th Century pulpit, originally installed in a (now redundant) church in North Bannigham.
  • the carved faces at the top of the columns on the otherwise plain pulpit.

Building Project

We are immensely grateful to those who have given so much and worked so hard to allow us to get to this stage.  We are re-roofing the chancel and attending to drainage from the roof.  The work is planned to start at the beginning of April.  When it does start the chancel will be shut off from use, but the rest of the church will be open every day as usual.  Services should be held as usual.  Visitors will be welcome.

The builders have indicated that they will start work on 19th March.  That stage will involve the erection of scaffolding around the east end of the church to allow access to the roof to attend to the guttering.  Drainage work will also be undertaken at this time.  The builders will move inside just after Easter, erecting a plastic curtain across the church to minimise the spread of dust.  They will renovate the chancel roof at this stage.

The timing of the chancel roof had to be carefully timed in order to conform to the bat regulations.  From the picture below (dated 18 April 2018) you can see that the installation of the new roof is proceeding.

More details will be published as the work progresses.

While we have received much financial support for this work, there is still scope to give to this work.  If you would like more details of how you can get involved, please contact one of our Church wardens, Priscilla (01263 577247) or Glenn (01263 768877).

Thank you for your support and patience.
